Fortune hunters Lu Tien and Johnny Feng travel to India with plans to capture the giant monster ape. On the expedition, Johnny falls in love with Samantha, a Tarzan-like woman who was raised in the jungle. Samantha returns with the ape to civilisation, where the "Mighty Peking Man" escapes its shackles and ravages the city.

This Runme Shaw produced film capitalised on the craze of the 1976 remake of King Kong in classic Hong Kong action style. In 1999, the film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival, and was re-released in North America by Quentin Tarantino's distribution company Rolling Thunder Pictures.

ABOUT A FEAR OF MONSTERS

Monsters have entertained and united us through our fear – from the genre defining Orang Minyak to the enduring image of Godzilla tearing through the streets of Tokyo – A Fear of Monsters explores the monsters that have traversed folklores and popular culture to the silver screen.

Featuring Asian horror films from the 1950s – 2000s, this programme is a cinematic continuation of AFA’s exhibition, State of Motion 2019: A Fear of Monsters.
